QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE
“What is design and do I need it?”
-Design is the process through planning, measuring, visualization and execution to bring a project to fruition. Most homeowners have trouble visualizing what their space should look like or they have trouble understanding spacing. Everything we see around us, someone has decided the way it will look whether it’s good or bad. Hiring a designer can help you clarify and simplify what you really need and what you don’t.
“Do I need an architect or structural engineer?”
-If you have a commercial project or multi-residential project and require permits, yes you will need an architect for your contractor to pull the permits. For remodels and new builds for single family homeowners, the state of Kansas does not require an architect.
-Architects will specify how to build a structure, complying with codes for safety and environmental factors. Sometimes a structural engineer is necessary to determine whether or not prior to remodel what is possible and if so, how to build it to code. An example would be removing a load bearing wall.
-In some cases if your project is very complex, a designer and architect can work together.
“How much does this cost?”
-Costs will vary greatly depending on the size of your project and what needs you have. Costs on average will start from $750 and go up from there.
“Do I need a contractor ?”
-If you plan on remodeling your home, yes you will need a contractor. Reputable contractors will enter into a contract with you prior to work being done and will pull the necessary permits pertaining to your job allowing your jurisdiction to inspect their work.
-If you are in the planning stages of your project, it doesn’t hurt to reach out to one in conjunction with your designer.
“Are you a decorator?”
-No, WDC does not decorate and that is an entirely different field. Designing is different in that we deal with technical aspects of a space and some codes for building. There are several wonderful decorators in the Wichita and surrounding area that can be referred.
“Can you help me via email if I live too far away?”
-Absolutely! If you are able to measure accurately and send pictures, a price can be given for a draft and sent via pdf file.
